Artwork

Some of the artwork in the apartment is for sale, some is not. Some of the pieces are by Steven, others are by local artists we know. If you purchase one by a local artist, we will probably go out and buy another piece by that artist to replace it and support the local artist community. Also, if you take a studio tour with Steven, there are over 500 rubber stamps to choose from, and more artwork on the walls of the studio.

Family Tree

Vander Meer Family Tree

Steven Vander Meer
Not For Sale
This is a family tree illustration, my Dad's side of the family, that I did for a reunion t-shirt. Every element symbolizes an individual family member, from the branches, to the birds, the leaves, insects and blossoms. If you know the family structure, as family members do, you can identify each individual.

Stained Glass Hops

Stained Glass Hops

Colleen Clifford
Not For Sale
Colleen is a local Manila artist. I met her through her husband Ian Davidson, a member of The Absynth Quartet which is the band that recorded the song that I animated in my film Boomerang. Manila is a very creative community!

Manila Walking Map

Manila Walking Map

Currently Out of Print
I designed this as a courtesy map for guests and have plans to revise and enlarge it. The Lighthouse needs to be added, as well as tsunami evacuation routes and other things.

Birdhouse

Folk Art Bird House

Natalie Craig
$55
Did you notice the fence outside, how it's top is curved like the dunes? Well, that project made for a lot of cedar fence board scraps. I've made dozens of bird houses out of those scraps, and they were distributed among local artists for creative enhancement. The finished houses were auctioned off at Friends of the Dunes as a fundraiser at an event called Wine by the Sea. We bought this one because it looks so good in here.

Gus Clark Flowers

Flowers

Gus Clark
$350
Gus is a quite prolific Eureka artist who does not skimp on the amount of paint he uses. Bonus - there's another painting on the back!

Shorebird

Shorebird

Gus Clark
$30
It looks like a Kildeer to me, but if you were to ask Gus, he'd make up a new name on the spot, a very fanciful one.

Seated Nude

Joyce Jonté

Small Seated Nude
$25
Joyce and I together run the Arcata Life Drawing Circle, which I began in my studio at the time, a rented space above the Hubcap store in Arcata. She draws and paints from the figure at least three or four times a week and coordinates all of our models.

Owl

Owl

Patricia Sennott
$85
This is a reproduction of a monotype by a good friend of ours. Monotype is a kind of printmaking where you only get one print (and sometimes a second "ghost" print).

Beer Gardening

Beer Gardening

Buzz Parker
$45
Limited edition print of an illustration that you can look at for a long time and keep seeing more and more. The detail is incredible and Buzz must like beer just about as much as I do.

Tile

Bathroom Tile

James Bavin
Not For Sale
James came up with the design during the renovation here at Old Purple. He cut the tiles on site and put the whole thing together in-between surfing sessions on the Penisula.

Gesture Drawing

Gesture Drawing

Steven Vander Meer
$300
Gesture drawings, also called croquis, are the quick warm-up sketches we do at the beginning of a life drawing session; each pose is a minute or less. I do mine on cheap newsprint because most of them are garbage, and are just for practice. Every once in a while, though, one will turn out magically. Using wood stain and whatever materials I have laying around in my woodshop, I mount them on what I call "box frames".

Often times, while gesture drawing, I'll use different colors and pile several figures up on one piece of newsprint. These can sometimes turn out to be interesting accidental compositions.

Using a pen loaded with India ink, this figure was drawn directly from life.
