Do you do any kind of pencil markings first, or just jump straight in with the pen?

Funny you should ask today of all days, as I normally just dive in with pen straight onto blank white paper. Today however, I made loose pencil sketches first, then went over with ink, then erased. You get more accurate proportions this way, but I also like the funky look of the other method, which is very imperfect.
